Russian opposition leader murdered ahead of protest

Former Deputy Prime Minister and Putin critic Boris Nemtsov was shot dead in central Moscow, according to various reports.

He was due to take part in a large protest against the Kremlin on Sunday but was shot four times in the back while crossing a bridge on Friday night.

Speaking to the FT just a few days ago, Mr Nemtsov said: "Three years ago, we were an opposition. Now we are no more than dissidents. The task is to organise a real opposition again."
