BERLIN (MNI) – The German government expects to win a sound
majority in the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, for the
European Stability Mechanism (ESM) planned to be established in
mid-2013, government spokesman Christoph Steegmans said Wednesday.

The government is confident it can overcome possible concerns of
individual lawmakers, Steegmans said. “We are banking on a convincing
majority in the Bundestag,” he said.

Klaus-Peter Willsch, a backbencher from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s
CDU, was quoted by the German regional daily Mitteldeutsche Zeitung on
Wednesday as saying that some lawmakers from the government camp might
not vote for the ESM.

However, even if that proves to be true it is widely expected that
the ESM will be approved by a large majority in the Bundestag given that
the opposition Social Democrats and Greens are expected to vote in favor
of it.
