    Cause this was the first pair to be quoted on a cable laid under the Atlantic ocean between london and noo yok.

    when the pound was reserve they tradeed via the atlantic cable

    I guess because trading was done through cable network between US and Britain under the Atlantic when dinosaurs ruled the planet :P
