    Final Thoughts on August Employment

Although this week’s data were mixed, there was enough good news to warrant a slight improvement in our forecast for Friday’s employment tally. We now expect total nonfarm employment to have fallen by 100,000 in August, versus our original forecast of 140,000. The forecast for a smaller decline is due to private employment, which is expected to have increased by 40,000 on net, versus our previous expectation for no change. More private job creation may appear at odds with the ADP report, but that survey tends to undershoot the Bureau of Labor Statistics tally by a good margin.
