The US Army corps has rejected a request from Senators to redirect flow from the Missouri river into the Mississippi.

Due to the Midwestern drought, water levels in the Mississippi are in danger of falling below the levels needed for barges to haul goods. That would create an enormous bottleneck in the US transportation industry.

I don’t know all the details but there were fears that diverting flow from the Missouri would hurt farmers who rely on its waters for irrigation.

Overall, it’s a reminder of growing problems due to the long-term drought.
