The smog in Beijing and 29 other cities has reached unfathomable levels.

The air has been classified as hazardous to human health for a fifth consecutive day, at its worst hitting pollution levels 25 times that considered safe in the U.S. The entire city is blanketed in a thick grey smog that smells of coal and stings the eyes.

The report says one-third of the 9000 daily visits to Beijing’s children’s hospital are due to respiratory diseases.

It’s impossible to imagine another 20 years of 7% Chinese growth without major action on air pollution or a public revolt.
