Magnitude 8.0 earthquake off Chile sparks tsunami warning for all of Latin America’s Pacific coast – USGS

  • Quake is off the northern Chilean coast
  • Chile’s official emergency office says it has requested preventive evacuation of the northern coastline following the quake
  • Tsunami warning in effect for Chile, Peru, Ecuador; watch in effect for Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica
  • Quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), 83 kilometers from Iquique on Chile’s coast

That’s doesn’t sound good at all.

ADDED:

  • USGS has revised up to M8.2
  • Tsunami already hitting coastal areas of northern Chile
  • Tsunami activity measures 5.6-6.3 feet

Some reports saying no reports of major damage (let’s hope casualties are at a minimum too)

More as it is coming in:

  • Chile’s ONEMI emergency office (National Office of Emergency of the Interior Ministry) says there are initial reports of landslides partially blocking some roads and highways (Reuters)
  • Chilean government says there is no serious damage to infrastructure or reports of victims
