This sounds awful but it will be a source of considerable speculation because of the location of the crash.

A report from Interfax cites an aviation industry source and there’s also talk it’s a Boeing 777, which has a typical seating capacity of 314 to 451 passengers.

Boeing 777

First of all, if it’s a Malaysia Airlines flight it will be a reminder of the Flight 370 mystery. That was also a 777 — a second crash for that airline and that plane would be a inexplicably bad luck or something worse.

Second, there will be speculation that the tension, attacks and violence near the border was responsible for the crash.

Looking at the Malaysia Airlines international route map, the flight was almost certainly headed to or from Europe. The map doesn’t show any of those routes flying over the Russia-Ukraine border but perhaps that’s due to projecting the routes on a flat map rather than a globe.

This report is spooking the market. Does it have something to do with the Russian sanctions yesterday?

Update: . Russian officials said the plane did not enter Russian airspace when expected and crashed in Eastern Ukraine. That’s from a Russian aviation industry source who spoke with Reuters.
