As I wrote yesterday this week-end has been the start of the final countdown to a referendum that one way or another will be a watershed moment for the future of the UK, and the latest polls confirm that it’s going down to the wire.

The results of three polls were released yesterday and went as follows:

  • Survation – No 53.5% ahead Yes on 46.5%. A word of caution though here as it was commissioned by the Better Together No campaign.
  • Opinium/Observer poll showed a narrow gap in favour of No. Excluding undecided voters, the poll found 53 % of those questioned plan to vote No while 47 % intend to vote Yes.
  • an internet survey of 705 Scots by ICM for The Telegraph has Yes voters leading by 54% versus 46% for the No campaign. The word of caution here is that the poll size is less than the usual number around 1000

And a poll publised today by the Sunday Times, conducted by Panelbase, has No on 50.6% with Yes on 49.4%

This morning both campaign leaders appeared on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show which can be viewed on BBCiPlayer here . For those unable to do so there was little comment of note but the expected last minute pleas.

With over 500,00 voters still “Undecided” the balance of power would appear to be firmly in their hands, and the reaction for the pound on Asia’s opening is likely to be muted given the closeness pf the contest. But, as we say on so many occasions, markets hate uncertainty and we should expect a volatile week ahead.
