More than 1,000 polling stations opened today for the independence referendum ruled illegal by Spain and more than 2 million people had voted as of 6 pm local time. There are about 5.4m eligible voters in the region.
The off-and-on again referendum was held despite Spain’s Constitutional Court ordering its suspension. It’s likely that votes for independence will win when the results are announced Monday morning in Spain.
