New Yorkers encouraged to stay home because of storm

Wall Street might be hitting the snooze button this morning because of a blizzard warning for the city starting later today.

Earlier forecasts of up to 3 feet of snow have been downgraded to 18-24 inches but that could still completely snarl the city. The storm is centered just North of New York City but will extend from Philadelphia to Canada.

“My message to New Yorkers is to prepare for something worse than we have seen before,” the mayor said on Sunday afternoon. “Now is the time to get ready for this extreme weather.”

In 2010, 20-inches of snow fell in the city but the heaviest storm in city history was in 2006 when 26.9 inches fell in parts of the city.

The snow will begin to fall around the time the New York Stock Exchange opens and continue for about 24 hours.

Update: As snow begins to fall, a NYSE spokesman says normal operating hours are planned ‘for now’.
