A sparse data agenda today in Asia, but there is the Bank of Japan coming up

2130 GMT - New Zealand - services PMI for December (BNZ - BusinessNZ Performance of Services Index (PSI))

  • prior 56.4

Last week we got a bit of a surprise sharp drop in the NZ manufacturing PMI: BusinessNZ Manufacturing PMI (December): 51.2 (prior 57.7)

Expectations are the services PMI will be a little lower also. If it isn't, NZD could see a little pop (the services PMI does not usually have too big an impact though)

2230 GMT - Australia - weekly consumer sentiment

ANZ Roy Morgan weekly Consumer Confidence

  • prior 123.5, and another better result for this resurgent indicator (that's me putting a hex on it for today)

While consumer sentiment seems to be recovering, it'll need to translate into better consumer spending to keep the RBA happy. Slow wage growth and high household indebtedness have weighing upon the consumer in Australia. Mind you, I picked up my new bike over the weekend, so if I'm an indicator things are looking up!

And so to the BOJ - expect the announcement sometime from 0230 GMT. Expect no change to policy (no one expects a change). I posted some previews already:

and I'll have more to come on the Bank of Japan separately
