Fed should consider not hiking until mid-2018 according to an article in the New York Times

Chicago Fed president Charles Evans, is not so anxious to raise rates in December like other Fed officials (don't bet on the Fed not hiking). This is according to an article in the NY Times CLICK HERE)

Some highlights:

  • "What if we just decided to wait until middle of the year and if we saw inflation pickup, then we could do something"
  • I've been looking at the data and the data have not been strongly indicating that we should continue with a rate increase in December
  • maybe it's time to stop and see whether inflation expectations are going to move in line with our 2% objective
  • if the judgment was that were still likely to be under running our 2% objective, maybe we should stop briefly and assess for more information; wait until mid-2018

Evans is a voting member this year. He will not be a voting member in 2018.
