New York Times report

This is the first known time that the special counsel demanded documents directly related to Trump's businesses, according to the NYT report.

The subpoena ordered the Trump Organization to hand over all documents related to Russia and other topics he is investigating. It may have been delivered over recent weeks but it likely ensures the investigation will stretch at least a few more months.

The report says investigators have been asking about deals in Russia and the Middle East. In July, Trump said the investigation would be crossing a 'red line' if it looked into Trump family finances beyond Russia.
