Robertson represented the Labour Party in the seat of Wellington Central since 2008. He was elected Labour's deputy leader in 2011, under David Shearer. He contested the leadership of the party in the 2013 leadership election and was replaced as deputy leader by David Parker.
He is currently Labour's finance spokesperson.
