A primary for the Republican nomination in Alabama continues

When Jeff Sessions left the Senate to lead Donald Trump's Department of Justice, he left behind a seat in the Senate.

The Governor and the Republican establishment gave the seat to Luther Strange but only on an interim basis. He needs to win a special election on December 12 to finish out the term, that extends to January 2021.

He might not get the chance.

Polls show that he badly trails Roy Moore for the Republican nomination. The thing is, Moore is no friend to the Republican establishment. He's campaigned as a far-right outsider and is fervently religious. He's turned the primary into a referendum on Mitch McConnell's leadership of the Republican Senate.

The primary vote will take place late Tuesday. Here's more background.
