Major indices up about 0.5% on the day

The major indices have now risen 5 straight days. Today was more of a challenge with up and down price action, but at the end of the the major indices are ending well off the lows and closer to the highs.

The final numbers are showing:

  • The S&P rose 11.52 points or 0.45% at 2596.49. The low reached 2562.02. The high extended to 2597.82.
  • The Nasdaq rose 28.989 points or 0.42% at 6986.06. The low reached 6877.08. The high extended to 6991.37.
  • The Dow rose 120.50 points or 0.5% at 23999.54. Low reached 23703. The high extended to 24014.

Some of the losers included some retailers led by Macy's which reported disappointing Christmas sales.

In the forex market today, the AUD and the USD were the strongest. the CHF got creamed and was the weakest. There was rumblings that the SNB may have had a hand in the selling of the CHF.
