Bank of Canada #2 is leaving the central bank for academia as he takes a position in academia at the University of Toronto.
It’s a surprise because he 1) he took on a seven-year term in July 2010 2) he’s been at the Bank since 1984.
He could have felt spurned after he was passed over in favor of Poloz. Or Poloz’ (misplaced) optimism about the economy might have created friction. Or they just didn’t get along. Then again, there could be a million reasons for his departure, like that Ottawa is the most boring place on earth.
