The first data hits at 2330GMT - note the time, earlier than the regular 2350GMT we are accustomed to from Japan

  • Overall Household Spending y/y for March, expected is -4.1%, prior was 1.2%
  • Jobless Rate for March, expected is 3.3%, prior was 3.3%
  • Job-To-Applicant Ratio for March, expected is 1.28, prior was 1.28

Inflation data (2330GMT)

  • National CPI y/y for March, expected is flat at 0.0% y/y, prior was 0.3%
  • National CPI y/y excluding Fresh Food for March, expected is -0.2%, prior was 0.0%
  • National CPI excluding Food, Energy y/y for March, expected is 0.8%, prior was 0.8% ... (Note - this measure of inflation is what is generally used in other countries as 'core' inflation)
  • Tokyo CPI y/y for April, expected is -0.2%, prior was -0.1% (Tokyo CPI data is available a month earlier than the National CPI)
  • Tokyo CPI excluding Fresh Food y/y for April, expected is -0.3%, prior was -0.3%
  • Tokyo CPI excluding Food, Energy y/y for April, expected is 0.5%, prior was 0.6%

At 2350GMT

  • Industrial Production m/m for March (preliminary reading), expected is 2.8%, prior was -5.2%
  • Industrial Production y/y (preliminary), expected is -1.6%, prior was -1.2%
  • Retail Trade for March m/m, expected is 0.5%, prior -2.3%
  • Retail Trade y/y, expected is -1.4%, prior 0.4%

Later in the day, due at 0500GMT we get inflation data directly from the Bank of Japan - its their own measure of 'core' iflation, this time excluding fresh food and energy

  • For March, expected 1.0% and prior of 1.1%

Speaking of the Bank of Japan .... their 2-day meeting concludes today.

There is no scheduled time for the announcement of their decision, but it usually comes in the 0230 to 0300GMT time window. I'll be back with more on the BOJ.
