FRANKFURT (MNI) – At least six EU member states outside the
Eurozone will join the “Pact for the Euro” that seeks to improve
economic cooperation and international competitiveness, German business
daily Handelsblatt reported on Wednesday, citing diplomatic sources.
Countries due to join include Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Lithuania
and Latvia, the newspaper said. Denmark has already officially confirmed
that it will join the Pact. Hungary is still considering whether or not
to participate, the newspaper said.
Great Britain and Sweden have opted out. German chancellor Angela
Merkel, who had pushed the Pact through, had explicitly invited member
states outside the common currency region to join.
Members of the “Pact for the Euro” commit themselves to closer
economic cooperation, including a set of economic targets that should
lead to more economic convergence across Europe.
