Lula da Silva faces 12 year sentence

After a brief standoff, former Brazilian President Lula surrendered today to serve a 12-year jail sentence for corruption.

The 72 year old was a front-runner for the October election but was convicted of accepting a beachfront apartment in exchange for favors.

He lost his first appeal in January and plans to continue fighting the decision but Brazil has laws that will make it nearly impossible for him to run this year.

"This will not be the end of me because I am no longer a human being, I am an idea," da Silva told crowds today.
