Comments by China's commerce ministry

  • Hopes that US adopts measures to correct behaviour in trade dispute
  • Currently studying measures to mitigate tariffs impacts
  • Also studying targeted measures to help foreign firms in China
  • China's retaliatory measures against US are forced, to defend country's interest
  • China's latest trade actions has nothing to do with US politics
  • Yuan depreciation is more detrimental than beneficial to China's economy
  • Will not use yuan as a tool to resolve trade dispute
  • Will maintain yuan exchange rate in a reasonable range

There's still no news on whether or not they are going ahead with trade talks later today but latest reports suggest that China may be sending a low-level delegation to Washington instead. Should that be the case, it's more of a symbolic gesture and talks won't accomplish anything.
