The South China Sea region is subject to competing claims from China and numerous other countries such as Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.
China says Chinese oil and gas firms have discovered oil fields with 200 million tonnes of oil, along with gas fields' reserves estimated around 300 billion tonnes.
