China said the measure is to guard its interests and to keep trade frictions from escalating
This is more of a threat to place them if the US does than imposing them. Still, it raises the stakes in the trade war.
The PBOC earlier raised FX forward reserve requirements, making it tougher to bet against the yuan (or hedge). That improved sentiment but this has reversed that move.
