BEIJING (MNI) – Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao reiterated China’s
support for the euro and urged European leaders to act decisively to
resolve the sovereign debt crisis, the state TV reported Wednesday.
“China supports a stable euro and has confidence in the euro and
the European economy,” Wen said in a meeting with visiting German
Chancellor Angela Merkel, repeating Beijing’s long-standing line.
“Europe’s own effort is the key and fundamental to solving the debt
problem. China supports Europe’s efforts in handling the crisis,” Wen
said.
Wen urged high-debt European countries to take decisive moves to
implement appropriate fiscal policies. He also called for joint efforts
by international organizations to address the European debt crisis.
“China urges the International Monetary Fund and other
international organizations to play an important role in solving the
debt problem and would like to step up communications with all parties
to contribute to effective policy,” Wen told Merkel.
Wen argued that solving the debt problem ultimately requires robust
economic growth and called for the abolition of all kinds of trade and
investment protectionism.
