WASHINGTON (MNI) – The following is the commentary from the
ICSC-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Snapshot released Wednesday:

The pace of retail sales for the first week of fiscal September
ushered in the month on a weak note. The ICSC-Goldman Sachs (ICSC-GS)
chain store sales index for the week ending September 4 declined by 0.4%
on a week-over-week basis, while the year-over-year pace moderated to
1.8% — its slowest since May 22 (+1.3% y/y). Weather negatively
affected sales for yet another week as the consumers’ appetite for “buy
and wear” fall apparel demand was curbed.

For the fiscal month of September, ICSC Research expects sales will
increase by about 3% — a continuation of recent trends in demand.
