May splits cabinet in bid to resolve custom issues

This article is based on a BBC article. Theresa May has divided her cabinet into two working parties in order to work out the best solution for a customs trade arrangement

May's preferred method collecting taxes was this :

'UK to collect tariffs set by the EU customs union on goods coming into the UK on behalf of the EU. If those goods didn't leave the UK and UK tariffs on them were lower, companies could then claim back the difference'.

Boris Johnson, the foreign secretary was, with others , opposed. Those who oppose it see it as too bureaucratic, which it would be.

So, what is the alternative? One is called Max Fac:

It would use 'new technologies and trusted trader schemes to remove the need for physical customs checks. Trusted trader schemes would enable companies to pay duties every few months rather than every time they crossed the border'

Either way involves pain and hassle for UK businesses. This issue must be resolved as it is holding up proceedings at the moment. Check out the full article here and watch the video on the top of the feed to see the key issues in one handy place.
