Russia says the US and Ukraine are distorting last week’s Geneva agreement. They say Ukraine needs to immediately withdraw military units from the Eastern part of the country and seek an inclusive dialogue with all parties.
Instead, the leadership in Kiev has re-activated the anti-terrorist operations which aim to use military forces to suppress separatists. Russia is vehemently opposed to using soldiers against Russian speakers in Ukraine.
At the moment, the market isn’t overly concerned with Ukraine but it’s difficult to see a way out of the crisis. The rebels in eastern Ukraine have a taste of power now and Kiev appears powerless to stop them. Elections are scheduled for May 25 and the best-case scenario is no bloodshed in between.
