FRANKFURT (MNI) – It is challenging to keep inflation under
control, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet confessed
Wednesday.
Addressing students who had just finished playing games about the
economy and inflation launched by the ECB, Trichet remarked that he
hoped the students had found the experience “interesting and fun.”
“But perhaps it wasn’t so easy to keep inflation low and stable, in
line with our definition of price stability: less than 2%, but close to
2%,” he said, in remarks prepared for delivery and provided in advance
by the ECB.
“If that was the case, then the games have already served a
purpose, because in real life it is challenging to keep inflation low
and stable,” he noted.
Trichet praised his bank’s communication policy, reminding that it
was the first major central bank to hold press conferences after the
Governing Council meeting.
The bank also publishes a monthly bulletin, has educational videos
and games for children, he pointed out. “But there is always room for
further improvement. And this is no time for complacency.”
