FRANKFURT (MNI) – European governments should shift more of the tax
burden away from labor markets in order to boost employment levels that
are still falling in many countries in the European Union, the European
Commission said Wednesday.
The Commission, in a briefing on its 2013 growth outlook, said
about one-third of EU members had room to shift more taxes to pollution,
property and consumption to help boost job creation. The Commission also
said it hoped for progress on a financial transaction tax.
“We need to boost job creation and the demand for labor wherever
possible,” said Laszlo Andor, in charge of employment and social
affairs, warning that the outlook for employment in the European Union
had “further worsened” heading into 2013.
