EU aims to get DUP on board

The DUP doesn't want a border in the Irish sea and the party is propping up Theresa May's government. The Guardian reports that a new offer from the EU would move controls away from natural borders.

"It is understood the proposals for checks 'away from the Irish border' envisage controls as near as possible to the source rather than the destination of the goods, meaning they could take place anywhere across the country and not just in ports such as Holyhead or Liverpool, as previously suggested," the report says.

Leaders are hoping for a breakthrough before an Oct 18 EU summit and are hoping to make an announcement on Oct 15. That sets up a week of sensitive discussions and the expectation that next weekend will be a high-stakes showdown.
