FRANKFURT (MNI) – More Europe is needed to ensure the area can
emerge from the current crisis and avoid new ones, European Council
President Herman van Rompuy said Wednesday at an event to honour
outgoing European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet.
“The Eurozone can only be as strong as its weakest link. We can’t
afford persistent divergence within the same union. Every member of the
zone holds the future of the zone in its hands,” van Rompuy said.
Van Rompuy said that the recently agreed Euro-plus pact and
strengthening of the Stability and Growth Pact may not be sufficient but
that Europe “should go further.”
“This means a loss of sovereignty for everyone,” he said.
