Comments by the European Commission following May-Juncker talks

Brexit
  • Says made new assurances that backstop is temporary
  • No further meetings currently scheduled
  • Willing to meet with UK negotiators at any time
  • Up to UK parliament to take important decisions this week

The first and final comment are the notable ones and the key word there being 'assurances' with no legally binding obligations attached to it. The European Union is continuing to maintain that "temporary" means temporary but with no clear end date for the backstop, that isn't going to fly with UK lawmakers.

The final point is basically saying that the ball belongs in the UK's court now when it comes to deciding what sort of Brexit outcome will take place.

Meanwhile, in case you missed it, we'll be hearing from May later via a written statement. It's usually uncommon for something like this to come about so expect it to be a big announcement. If anything, I reckon it'll be changing up tomorrow's vote to be a provisional vote instead of a meaningful one.
