European Parliament opposes Mersch’s appointment to ECB’s executive board

On the grounds that more women should be put forward for top ECB posts. (All current central bank governors in the 17 state eurozone are men).

Sharon Bowles chairwoman of the EU parliament’s economic and monetary affairs committee recommended the full assembly issue a negative opinion on Mersch.

ECB Pres Draghi and EU pres Van Rompuy said they recognized the gender imbalance but called for Mersch’s appointment on the grounds that it would help the ECB tackle Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, especially in view of the increased workload and extra supervisory roles..
