FRANKFURT (MNI) – Germany has no plans to expand its short-selling
ban beyond the existing ban for naked short selling, a spokesperson for
the German Finance Ministry told Market News International on Thursday.
“There are no plans for a general short-settling ban,” the
spokesman said.
Earlier today, there were rumours that Germany would impose a
general ban on short-selling, following the example of other Eurozone
countries such as France and Italy.
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said earlier on Thursday
that there needed to be an international agreement on general
short-selling bans.
A ban for naked short-selling has been in place in Germany since
last year.
