BERLIN (MNI) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel in her government
declaration this morning will reaffirm her call for making the Eurozone
a stability union by shifting more national budget sovereignty to the
European level, a senior lawmaker from Merkel’s CDU/CSU-FDP coalition
said Friday.
“Stability policy coupled with deficit reduction is the only way out
of the crisis,” CDU/CSU parliamentary whip Peter Altmaier told German
ZDF public television.
The European Commission and the European Court of Justice need to
get more control over national budgets, Altmaier reaffirmed. Therefore,
EU treaty changes are needed.
“If we are willing to achieve this in a short time, then there is a
chance that the markets will react to this and calm again,” he reckoned.
