BERLIN (MNI) – Germany and France on Monday in a joint declaration
called for the swift and complete implementation of the crisis rescue
deal struck last Thursday by European leaders.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas
Sarkozy will meet on Wednesday in Cannes with representatives of the
IMF, the European institutions and the Greek government to discuss the
necessary measures for a swift implementation of the EU deal, German
government spokesman Steffen Seibert said.
Merkel and Sarkozy had a telephone conversation on the matter
today, Seibert said.
“Germany and France are determined to assure jointly with their
European partners the complete and swift implementation of the summit
decisions which are today more necessary than ever,” the spokesman said.
“Germany and France are convinced that this agreement will allow
Greece the return to sustainable growth,” he said. “Germany and France
wish that in accordance with their European partners and the IMF a
timetable to implement these agreements will be soon adopted.”
Greece’s Prime Minister George Papandreou announced on Monday that
he will hold a referendum on the EU bailout deal, hinting that early
elections are possible if the referendum fails to win voters’ approval.
