BERLIN (MNI) – The German parliament will likely approve the
planned European Stabilisation Mechanism (ESM) with a large majority, a
senior lawmaker from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s center-right CDU/CSU
bloc told the business daily Handelsblatt in an interview published on
its website Thursday.

“The agreements on the ESM reached so far are in Germany’s
interest,” Klaus-Peter Flosbach, the CDU/CSU’s parliamentary fiscal
speaker, told Handelsblatt. “Thus, I’m very confident that at the end of
the debate the ESM will be supported by a large majority.”

The German government said last month that it expected to win a
sound majority in parliament for the ESM.
