Germany's European affairs minister, Michael Roth, comments

  • Requests Britain to make a sensible proposal on how it wishes to proceed
  • Says that EU patience as a whole is being sorely tried
  • Must be clear that if delay goes beyond June, Britain must take part in EU elections
  • Says need clear and precise proposals on why extension is needed

With no clear proposals set to be made before Thursday, the best EU27 leaders can do is agree to a written approval process for an extension before 29 March should it be needed. Otherwise, it's pretty much still a game of wait-and-see until the UK government and parliament comes up with something different.
