BERLIN (MNI) – Germany’s free market orientated FDP, the junior
partner in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition government, wants to
shorten the period during which older unemployed receive benefits.
“Older workers are needed as skilled labor,” FDP secretary general
Christian Lindner told German business daily Handelsblatt in an
interview published Wednesday.
The previous government had lengthened the period of jobless
benefits for people over 58 to 18 months from 12 months. The FDP wants
to bring it back to 12 months, which would save E1.5 billion per year.
