FRANKFURT (MNI) – Employment in Germany increased for the 22nd
consecutive month in December to yet another record high, while
unemployment fell further, the Federal Statistical Office reported on
Tuesday.
The number of persons gainfully employed rose by a seasonally
adjusted 47,000 in December to 41.255 million. Over the same period, the
number of jobless fell by 33,000 to 2.33 million in ILO terms, trimming
the unemployment rate by 0.1 point to 5.5%.
The outlook for the labor market is uncertain and subject to
domestic economic developments, the Labour Office’s research arm IAB
said in a recent report.
The main scenario — assuming GDP growth of 1% this year — sees
unemployment falling by 50,000 on average to 2.92 million. Most of that
reduction would be due to a statistical carryover rather than to monthly
trends, the institute said.
At 8:55 GMT today, the Labour Ministry is scheduled to release
jobless figures for January.
