BERLIN (MNI) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Friday that the
Eurozone has learned from its mistakes and the deal struck in Brussels
does not include any false compromises.
The 17 members of the Eurozone and six non-euro area members early
Friday reached an agreement for an intergovernmental treaty that will
strengthen fiscals rule and the excessive deficit procedure.
“I’m very happy with the result,” Merkel said on entering the EU
Council building in Brussels for the second summit day. “It was about
not making false compromises for the euro, and we achieved that.”
The chancellor reasoned that “the whole world will see that we have
learned from our mistakes.”
“We are very happy that not only the euro states but also a number
of other states have joined this strong fiscal discipline [union],” she
said.
