BERLIN (MNI) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday she
did not expect the global economy to be seriously affected by the
Japanese catastrophe.
However, in a government declaration in parliament, Merkel conceded
that “the economic impact of the … catastrophe is currently not yet
assessable.”
The chancellor reminded that in the past that Japan had been able
to cope with natural disasters. Yet, “the world has to be prepared this
time that the Japanese economy will face larger challenges than in
previous catastrophes,” she said.
Still, “I do not fear currently that the global economy will be
affected significantly,” Merkel stressed, adding that Germany “will work
with its partner to minimize the impact of catastrophe on the global
economy as best as possible.”
