BERLIN (MNI) – German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said
Monday that financial markets were “excessively nervous” about
conditions in the Eurozone.
“The real economic situation is not so bad,” Schaeuble said in an
interview with ZDF public television.
Commenting on Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, the minister once
again underlined that Greece needs to meet agreed consolidation targets
before the next tranche of financial aid can be paid out. “There will be
no rebate,” he warned.
Schaeuble rejected demands that Greece be ousted from the Eurozone,
reminding that EU treaties do not allow this. If Greece wants to stay in
the Eurozone, then other member states will help it carry the heavy
burden of consolidation, he explained.
Asked about speculation that he could become the next chairman of
the Eurogroup of EMU finance ministers, Schaeuble replied that he liked
his current job: “I’m not looking for a new challenge.”
