ATHENS (MNI) – A lawmaker member of Greece’s ruling PASOK socialist
party – Thomas Rombopoulos – said today that he will be submitting his
resignation on Monday, in protest of the new round of austerity measures
announced by the government.
After days of speculation, Rombopoulos told a Greek radio station
that he could “no longer participate in a parliament that has no
decision rights”, indicating that the ruling PASOK MPs are being
pressured to approve the multi-year fiscal plan to be tabled for voting
next week.
However, Rombopoulos will resign from his seat entirely, he will
not become independent, therefore, the first runner up from PASOK party
will undertake his place.
The ruling party is expected to retain its fragile parliament
majority. Since the elections of 2009 it has lost 6 seats as a
result of MPs choosing to become independent in protest at austerity.
Reports surfacing in the Greek press say that three other PASOK
lawmakers are considering resignation. If these decide to keep their
seats, the government will have a one seat majority.
