CANNES (MNI) – The Greek prime minister will not resign today nor
he will ask for the resignation of his Cabinet, a senior aide of George
Papandreou told Market News International Thursday. He was commenting on
earlier press reports that the Greek premier will be heading to the
president of the republic Karolos Papoulias to offer his resignation .
“He will not resign or meet the president today. Papandreou will be
seeing his parliamentary group at 5:00 p.m. local time and then he
will address the parliament” the senior aide told MarketNews.
However, other members of the ruling Pasok socialist party insist
that Papandreou has “no choice” as, if he doesn’t resign today “he will
be forced to resign tomorrow as he will not get the vote of confidence
from the parliament”
The senior aide, asked to comment whether the prime minister is
thinking of forming a coalition or transition government, did not reply.
“We are examining various options,” he said.
Earlier, main opposition party leader, Antonis Samaras, stated that
he would not oppose a crisis or a transition government.
