9GB of Macron emails posted online

Macron had earlier said he was the victim of attempts to compromise his campaign's emails and his campaign confirmed the breach.

"The En Marche! Movement has been the victim of a massive and co-ordinated hack this evening which has given rise to the diffusion on social media of various internal information," the statement said.

Information is erratic on what's in the emails but some are said to go back 17 years and up to two weeks ago. The confusion is compounded by warnings from French authorities against posting the information and reports of censorship of websites.

Naturally, fingers are pointed at Russia.

As far as I can tell, nothing damaging has been reported but it's tough to tell truth from fiction. What's clear is that hacking during elections is an overwhelming part of the modern landscape.

The second round vote is on Sunday.
