VIENNA (MNI) – Hungary’s new prime minister, Viktor Orban, conceded
Friday that it is hard to assess where the country actually stands
because the statistics have been falsified so often over recent years.
“It is difficult to say what the real figures are,” Orban told an
IIF conference here.
“The point is that in the last years in Hungary figures were so
many times falsified that now it is difficult to find a proper basis,”
the prime minister added later. “The state sources are not 100%
reliable.”
Thus, his government is trying to work out the numbers now together
with the business community, he said.
Despite the uncertain data, Orban reaffirmed his government’s
pledge to stick to the initial budget target.
“We are commited and we will do anything which is possible to keep
the budget deficit target which was set up by the previous government,”
he said. “We will do our best and in November we will see where we are.”
