TOKYO (MNI) – The value of construction orders received in February
by the 50 largest contractors in Japan rose 19.5% from a year earlier to
Y872.9 billion, the first y/y rise in two months, the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said on Thursday.
The February reading followed a fall of 10.7% in January, a rise of
13.1% in December and a fall of 5.3% in November.
The breakdown for the latest month follows (on-year changes in the
previous month in parentheses):
— Domestic private sector: +21.8% y/y at Y579.9 billion (vs.
-10.2% in January), the first rise in two months.
— Public sector: -4.7% y/y at Y205.9 billion (vs. -12.5% in
January), the second straight y/y fall.
— Overseas: Y42.4 billion in February 2011 vs. a net outflow of
Y8.3 billion caused by reductions in contracted values in February 2010
(vs. -15.5% in January), the first rise in two months.
