TOKYO (MNI) – The value of construction orders received in June by
the 50 largest contractors in Japan fell 10.2% from a year earlier to
Y781.12 billion, the first y/y drop in two months, the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said on Friday.

Construction orders have been very volatile this year. June’s
-10.2% followed +9.2% in May, -25.0% in April and +42.3% in March. It
compared with the record drop of 42.8% marked in July 2009.

The breakdown for the latest month follows (on-year changes in the
previous month in parentheses):

— Domestic private sector: -0.4% y/y at Y547.84 billion (vs.
+10.2%), the first y/y drop in two months.

— Public sector: -10.6% y/y at Y159.87 billion (vs. -13.5%), the
fifth consecutive y/y drop.

— Overseas: -74.5% y/y at Y24.14 billion (vs. +130.4%), the
first y/y drop in four months.
